On August 16, 2017, “New Hampshire Bar News,” the monthly publication of the New Hampshire Bar Association, published Joe’s article, “Some Thoughts on Good Legal Writing.” It also appears in the “Opinion” section of this website.

UNH Law School

On June 20, 2017, Joe was a speaker and panelist at a seminar entitled “Freedom of the Press: New Challenges in an Era of Distrust and Fake News.” Sponsored by the New Hampshire Supreme Court Society, the program drew an audience of lawyers, judges, professors, and journalists. Joe discussed some of the major First Amendment press cases decided during the last 100 years. He and Concord attorney Bill Chapman, who also spoke about press freedom, then responded to questions from moderator Joe McQuaid, publisher of the Manchester Union-Leader.

Redwood Library and Athenaeum

On November 9, 2016, the evening after the presidential election, Joe spoke to a sizeable, if somewhat weary, audience on the subject “Blasphemy in the Modern World.”

Teaching Law in Iceland

In October 2016 Joe was a visiting professor at the University of Iceland Law School. Thirty-three students from Iceland and several other European countries took his course entitled “The American Judicial System and American Constitutional Law.” This was Joe’s fourth teaching stint abroad. In Russia (2008 and 2011) he has taught courses on the American jury system, constitutional law, freedom of speech and press, and mediation and negotiation. Earlier in 2016 he taught First Amendment law and mediation and negotiation at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia).

Return Visit to Franklin Pierce University

On September 14, 2016, Franklin Pierce University held a series of lectures to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Joe’s lecture, “Blasphemy in Modern Times,” focused on the connection between terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism.
